PP Drinking Straw Making Machine

A PP drinking straw making machine extrudes, cools, hauls off and cuts PP, PE or PLA material into plastic drinking straws with customizable diameter and length.

Which Straw Machine You Need Starts With the Material

Almost every straw enquiry now starts with a regulation rather than a capacity figure. Single-use bans have pushed buyers toward paper and PLA, and an extrusion line is not a paper straw making machine. That decision comes first; diameter, length and output follow from it. SUHUI builds extrusion straw making machines for PP, PE and PLA in three frame sizes, covering φ1–14 mm diameter and 3–1,000 mm length at up to 45 kg/h. Model specifications are on the plastic straw making machine page, and the buyer guide walks through the extrusion process step by step.

Which Configuration Fits Your Straw Production?

Material / project situationRecommended machineWhy it fits
PP or PE drinking straws, standard and bubble-tea diametersJH01 series extrusion lineThe core configuration: extruder, die head, cooling trough, haul-off and cutter. Diameter is set by tooling, so one machine covers the whole φ1–14 mm range with a die change.
PLA compostable strawsJH01 series with PLA temperature profileSame mechanical line, narrower processing window. PLA needs resin drying and a lower barrel profile. Say so at the enquiry stage rather than after commissioning.
Flexible or bendable strawsJH01 series plus corrugating moduleThe bellows section is formed after extrusion by a separate unit. An add-on module rather than a different extruder, but it has to be planned into the layout from the start.
Paper strawsNot an extrusion machineA paper straw making machine spiral-winds and glues pre-printed reels. Different machine class, no shared parts. We build extrusion lines and will say so rather than sell you the wrong equipment.

Typical Straw Production Process

  1. 01 Resin drying Optional for PP and PE, mandatory for PLA. Undried PLA hydrolyses in the barrel and yields brittle straws that snap when bent.
  2. 02 Extrusion Single screw at 30:1 L/D, eight heating zones. Zone count matters more than motor size, because thin straw walls tolerate a narrow window.
  3. 03 Die head and sizing Tooling sets the diameter. A 6 mm straw to a 12 mm bubble-tea straw is a die and calibrator change, not a machine change.
  4. 04 Cooling Water trough. Trough length is what caps line speed: outrun its heat removal and the straw ovalises at the cutter.
  5. 05 Haul-off Inverter-driven, synchronised with the extruder. Its stability decides whether wall thickness is even or ripples.
  6. 06 Cutting Rotary cutter, 3 to 1,000 mm. Cut quality is the first thing a beverage buyer inspects, ahead of tolerance.
  7. 07 Collection and packing Counting, bundling or wrapping. Quoted separately, and the part buyers most often forget until the line ships.

Straw Making Machine: The Short Answer

Quick answer

A straw making machine extrudes molten PP, PE or PLA through a die head, cools the tube in a water trough, pulls it with a synchronised haul-off and cuts it to length. SUHUI supplies three frame sizes producing φ1–14 mm straws at 3–1,000 mm length, with output from 25 to 45 kg/h and line speeds above 250 m/min.

Paper straws are not made this way. They are spiral-wound and glued from paper reels on an entirely different machine, so the material decision has to be made before any equipment is specified.

PP, Paper or PLA

Three routes, three different machines. This is the decision that determines everything downstream, and it is usually made by regulation rather than by preference.

Route

PP / PE

PLA

Paper

Machine class

PP / PEExtrusion line. What SUHUI builds.

PLASame extrusion line, different temperature profile and resin drying.

PaperSpiral winding and gluing. A separate machine class with no shared parts.

Regulatory position

PP / PEBanned for single use across the EU and a growing list of other markets. Still viable for reusable and medical straws.

PLAAccepted in most markets as compostable, but only where industrial composting exists. Some jurisdictions treat it as plastic regardless.

PaperBroadly accepted. The default replacement in food service.

Processing difficulty

PP / PEForgiving. Wide temperature window, stable output, easy start-up.

PLANarrow window. Moisture-sensitive, degrades if overheated, needs drying before extrusion.

PaperNot an extrusion problem at all. Glue selection and curing drive quality.

Product behaviour

PP / PEHolds shape indefinitely in liquid. The benchmark every alternative is judged against.

PLABehaves like plastic in cold drinks. Softens in hot liquid, which rules it out for coffee.

PaperSoftens over time in any liquid. Wall count and coating decide how long it lasts.

Confirm what your destination market permits before you specify anything. A PP line delivered into a market that has banned single-use plastic straws is unusable equipment, and the ban usually arrives faster than the payback period.

JH01 Model Specifications

Three frame sizes. The difference is screw diameter and motor, which set output; the product range they can make is identical.

Size from straws per minute, not from kg/h. A thin 6 mm straw and a 12 mm bubble-tea straw at the same kg/h are wildly different piece counts, and piece count is what your order book is written in. Send target pieces per day and the straw dimensions, and we will name the model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials can the straw making machine process?
The machine processes PP, and can be configured for PE or PLA after confirming the material grade.
Can straw diameter and length be customized?
Yes. Straw diameter and length are customizable through the die, haul-off speed and cutting configuration.
What equipment is included in the line?
A typical line includes the extruder, die head, cooling and forming unit, haul-off and cutting unit.
What information is needed for a straw machine quote?
Send the straw material, diameter and length range, required output, plant space, voltage and destination country.
Can an extrusion machine make paper straws?
No. A paper straw making machine spiral-winds and glues pre-printed paper reels, then cuts and cures them. No extrusion is involved and no components are shared, so an extrusion line cannot be converted. SUHUI builds extrusion lines only and will tell you directly if paper is your route.
What is different about running PLA instead of PP?
Mechanically the same line, but a much narrower processing window. PLA hydrolyses in the barrel if it is not dried first, giving brittle straws that snap when bent, and it degrades at PP temperatures. Specify PLA at the enquiry stage so the dryer and temperature profile are included rather than retrofitted.
How many straws per minute can the machine produce?
Piece output depends on straw dimensions, because the models are rated in kg/h. A JH01-255 at 45 kg/h yields far more 6 mm straws than 12 mm bubble-tea straws in the same hour. Line speed exceeds 250 m/min on all three models. Send target pieces per day plus diameter and length for a model recommendation.
Which JH01 model should I choose?
All three make the same product range, so the choice is purely output. The JH01-245 runs above 25 kg/h on a 50 mm screw, the JH01-250 above 35 kg/h on 55 mm, and the JH01-255 above 45 kg/h on 65 mm. Choose from your daily piece target, because an undersized line cannot be uprated later.
