Typical Pipe Extrusion Process Flow

  1. 01 Material feeding and drying Gravimetric or volumetric dosing, plus drying for PPR and any hygroscopic material. Dry blend for PVC is mixed and cooled before it reaches the hopper, and inconsistent blend here shows up as colour and wall variation hundreds of metres later.
  2. 02 Extrusion Conical twin screw for PVC dry blend, grooved-feed single screw for HDPE and PPR. Output is set by screw diameter and speed, but melt quality is set by temperature profile, and it is melt quality that decides whether the pipe passes pressure testing.
  3. 03 Die forming The die and the spider or basket design set wall distribution around the circumference. Each diameter range needs its own die and calibration sleeve, which is why extending a line to a new size is a tooling purchase rather than a setting change.
  4. 04 Vacuum calibration The tank that fixes outside diameter. Vacuum holds the soft pipe against a calibration sleeve while the wall sets. Vacuum stability matters more than tank length here, and it is the first place to look when outside diameter drifts.
  5. 05 Cooling Spray or immersion tanks in series. Cooling length scales with wall thickness and line speed, not with diameter alone. Under-cooled pipe keeps shrinking after the haul-off and comes out of tolerance at the far end of the line.
  6. 06 Haul-off Caterpillar tracks that pull the pipe at constant speed. Haul-off speed against extruder output is what sets wall thickness, so the two are controlled together. Track count rises with diameter because grip has to spread over a larger surface.
  7. 07 Cutting Planetary saw for large-bore rigid pipe, guillotine or flying saw for small diameters. The cut has to happen while the pipe keeps moving, so the saw travels with the line and returns between cuts.
  8. 08 Stacking or coiling Tipping table for cut lengths, coiler for small-diameter HDPE and PPR. This is the stage most often under-specified: a line that extrudes 500 kg/h but stacks by hand will run at whatever speed two operators can keep up with.

If you produce more than one of the three, do not assume one line covers them. The extruder is the part that does not transfer. Downstream equipment can sometimes be shared across materials in the same diameter band; the extruder almost never can.

Diameter Bands and What Each One Costs You in Output

Diameter is the single variable that resizes every machine after the die. Output falls as diameter rises, because wall thickness rises with it.

Read the two right-hand columns together. A line quoted at 1,000 kg/h for Φ630 mm pipe is slower in metres per minute than a 250 kg/h line making Φ32 mm conduit. If your business is priced per metre rather than per kilogram, specify from line speed, not from kg/h.

Lines are normally built to cover two adjacent bands. Asking one line to span Φ20–630 mm means tooling for every size in between and a compromise on all of them.

When you compare two quotations, compare them unit by unit. A cheaper line is usually cheaper at the far end — a shorter cooling section, fewer haul-off tracks or manual stacking. Those three are exactly where a line loses the output it was sold on.

Inside a diameter band, three options account for most of the spread: co-extrusion layers, online wall-thickness gauging and the level of automation at the stacking end. None of them changes the pipe you can make; all three change how many operators the line needs and how much scrap it produces.

How much floor space does a pipe extrusion line need?
Length is driven by the cooling section rather than by the extruder. A small conduit line fits in roughly 20 to 25 metres, a mid-range line needs 30 to 40 metres, and large-bore HDPE lines run past 60 metres because vacuum and cooling tanks are placed in series.
