How Dirty the Material Is Decides the Whole Line

A plastic recycling washing line is specified from one number more than any other: how much of what arrives is not plastic. Clean in-house offcuts need rinsing; post-consumer agricultural film can carry 30 to 50 percent soil, moisture and organic matter by weight, and every stage after the feeder has to be sized for that load rather than for the nominal kg/h on the quotation. Film is the most common request: the PP PE film washing line runs 300–2,000 kg/h with float-sink density separation and brings agricultural and packaging film below 5 percent moisture. Which Washing Line Fits Your Material?

Typical Washing Line Process Flow

  1. 01 Feeding Bale opener, belt conveyor and a metal detector. On post-consumer film the feeder also has to survive stones, wire and the occasional tool, which is why a magnetic separator here is cheaper than a damaged rotor later.
  2. 02 Shredding / crushing Reduces bales to a size the wash stages can carry. Size here is a compromise: smaller pieces wash more thoroughly but lose more material as fines through the dewatering screens.
  3. 03 Washing Pre-wash, friction washers and hot wash where adhesive or grease is present. This is where contamination is actually removed, and it is the stage most often under-specified when a line is quoted to a price rather than to a material.
  4. 04 Separation Float-sink density tanks and hydrocyclones. PE and PP float, PET and PVC sink. Density separation cannot split PET from PVC, so anything that matters has to be sorted before this point rather than after.
  5. 05 Dewatering Centrifugal or squeezing dewatering to get bulk water off. How much water leaves here sets the load on the dryer, and the dryer is the most energy-hungry unit in the line.
  6. 06 Drying Thermal or air drying to below 5 percent moisture for film, lower for PET. Residual moisture comes back as bubbles and voids in the pellet, so drying capacity is specified from the wettest material you plan to run, not the average.
  7. 07 Pelletizing or reuse Washed flakes go to a pelletizing line or are sold as flake. Flake sells for less but needs no further equipment; the decision is a business one and is worth making before the washing line is specified.

Contamination Level Sets the Configuration

This is the only real selection axis in washing. Two plants running the same polymer need different lines if their material arrives in different condition.

  • Clean in-house scrapUncontaminated offcuts and purge from your own production. Often needs no washing at all — a rinse and dewatering stage at most. If someone quotes you a full line for this material, ask why.
  • Lightly soiled packagingPost-industrial film and rigid packaging with dust and light printing. Pre-wash plus friction washing is enough. Cold water works; the hot stage is optional and adds running cost without adding much.
  • Post-consumer film and agricultural filmThe heavy case, and the most common enquiry. Soil, moisture and organic matter can be a third of the incoming weight. Needs grit removal, multiple friction washers, a hot wash and serious dewatering plus drying. Yield after washing is typically 60 to 75 percent, which has to be in your business case.
  • Greasy, oily or adhesive-laden materialLabels, tape and food residue. A hot wash with caustic dosing becomes mandatory rather than optional, and that decision brings water treatment with it.
  • Mixed post-consumer wasteSorting comes before washing. Density separation splits PE and PP from PET and PVC, but nothing in a washing line separates PET from PVC, so mixed streams need optical sorting upstream or the contamination passes straight through.

Send a photograph of the incoming bale with your enquiry, not just the polymer and the target output. A film line for clean post-industrial scrap and one for agricultural film differ by roughly a factor of two in price at the same kg/h, and the difference is entirely in the wash and dry stages.

Watch for

ColdSpecifying cold only, then discovering the buyer rejects the flake on smell.

HotCaustic water cannot go to drain. Adding a hot stage means adding water treatment, which is a second cost buyers often miss.

Decide this from what your buyer accepts, not from what the material looks like. Odour is the test most recyclate fails, and odour comes from residue a cold wash leaves behind. If you are selling into packaging rather than into pipe or pallets, budget for the hot stage.

Water Consumption and What Happens to It

Water is the running cost buyers ask about last and regret first. It also decides whether a plastic washing plant is permitted at all in some regions.

Ask for the make-up figure in cubic metres per tonne of output, not the total circulating flow. Circulating flow tells you the pump size; make-up tells you the water bill and the discharge permit. Closed-loop treatment is quoted separately from the washing line and is not a small line item on post-consumer film.
