
Shortlisting plastic extruder manufacturers is unusually hard because the quotations you get back are not comparable. Two suppliers offer “a 90 mm single-screw extrusion line” at a 30% price gap, and nothing on either page explains where the gap comes from.
It usually comes from six places, and all six are hardware. This guide is about the line items to force into a quotation before you compare prices. It assumes you are buying the machine rather than parts made on somebody else’s machine, which is the first thing to settle.

Search this phrase and two unrelated industries come back. One group extrudes plastic parts for you as a contract service. The other builds the extruder itself and sells you the machine. The confusion is visible in the results themselves. Contract extruders describe profiles, tolerances and tooling lead times, because they are selling a part. Machine builders describe screw diameters, output in kg/h and installed power, because they are selling production capacity. Directory listings and ranked roundups mix both into one list.

One sells you a part. The other sells you the capacity to make it yourself.

A job shop asked for a screw diameter will redirect you to your part drawing, because it has no reason to discuss the machine. Neither answer is evasive — they are different businesses, and the rest of this guide addresses the builder.
Screw and Barrel Surface Treatment Belongs in the Quotation
The single largest hidden variable in an extruder quotation is what the screw and barrel are made of and how their surfaces were treated. Two machines with identical screw diameters can differ by years of service life on the same feed, and nothing about the outside of the machine shows it.

A nitrided case is tenths of a millimetre deep. Once it is gone, nothing underneath resists wear.
Two constructions dominate. A nitrided screw and barrel are made from a nitriding steel — 38CrMoAlA is the common grade in this industry — and gas-nitrided to produce a hard surface case. That case is thin, measured in tenths of a millimetre. It is entirely adequate for clean thermoplastic pellets and it is the cheaper option, but once it wears through, the base steel beneath it has no wear resistance at all.
A bimetallic construction lines the barrel bore with a hard alloy layer and pairs it with a screw carrying a corresponding hardfacing. It costs more and it exists for feeds that eat nitriding — glass-filled compounds, mineral-filled PVC dry blend, and abrasive post-consumer regrind. The instruction is short. Put it in the equipment list rather than in an email, name the steel grade or liner type, and ask what happens when the screw eventually wears. A supplier who machines its own screws answers that in one sentence.
Ask for the L Over D Ratio as a Number
The second variable that quietly moves a price is screw length. Two builders can both quote a 90 mm single-screw extruder and deliver machines with meaningfully different melting capacity, because the ratio of screw length to screw diameter is not fixed by the diameter and is frequently left out of the specification.

A screw diameter without an L/D figure is half a specification.
Some builders encode it in the model number so it cannot be lost. A supplier that publishes the ratio openly is easy to hold to it — the HDPE pipe extrusion line is split into a 33D series covering Φ20–1,200 mm and a 38D series reaching Φ20–1,600 mm, so the number is on the page before anyone quotes. A supplier who leaves it off the quotation is asking you to compare two machines on a dimension you cannot see. Where a model code does not carry the number, ask for it as a separate line.
You do not need to argue about which figure is correct for your polymer. You need it stated, for every extruder in the line including any co-extruder, so that the two quotations in front of you describe the same thing. A supplier who will not commit to the number in the equipment list has reserved the right to substitute a shorter screw.
Find Out Who Makes the Die Head
The die head is where a plastic extrusion line stops being generic. It is the part most often bought in rather than built, and it is the part you will need again — every new pipe size, profile revision or wall thickness change means tooling. Who holds the drawing decides what that costs later.

The die is the part you will buy again. Settle ownership before the first one is cut.
Ask three questions and write the answers into the contract. Is the die head designed and machined in your workshop, and if not, by whom. Who owns the tooling drawings for a die cut specifically for my product. What is the lead time and price for one additional size, asked now rather than in year two when you have no leverage.
Changeover hardware belongs in the same conversation, because it is a recurring cost dressed as a one-off. Ask for the electrical bill of materials by brand, not for the phrase automatic control.

Run Your Own Resin and Watch the Tolerance Band
A workshop trial before shipment is standard practice among builders who assemble their own lines, and it is worth insisting on. The mistake buyers make is treating it as a demonstration that the machine extrudes. What you are actually buying is dimensional stability held for hours, and that is what the trial should measure.

A four-minute demonstration and a four-hour record are different documents.
Send resin that matches what you will actually run, including the recycled fraction if you intend to blend one, and agree in advance what gets recorded. Four things are specific to an extruder and worth naming in the acceptance clause.
- The tolerance band over a stated run length — outside diameter and wall thickness sampled at fixed intervals across several hours, not a single measurement taken when the operator is happy.
- Melt pressure and melt temperature at the die, logged over the same period. Drift here precedes dimensional drift and tells you whether the screw is actually stable or merely averaging.
- Time from cold start to first saleable output, because on a line you will start most mornings, that number is a running cost.
- Scrap produced during one size change, if your product mix involves changeovers. It is the honest measure of how good the die and calibration hardware are.

The last row is why the trial run matters beyond the trial itself. Once a dated record exists of the machine holding tolerance on your resin, “it must be your material” becomes a testable claim rather than the default explanation for everything.

Put the shortlist in one table before looking at prices. Most of what separates two quotations is not visible in a total, and suppliers do not present these items in the same order or with the same names, so transcribing them into fixed rows is the whole exercise.
