
Search is plastic wrap recyclable and you get advice written for a kitchen drawer. That advice is correct as far as it goes, and it misses that the same phrase describes a material moving through warehouses by the tonne, sold on a spot market, and processed on dedicated lines. The two share a name and almost nothing else.
This article separates them. It covers what makes cling film and stretch wrap different materials, the specific way wrap breaks sorting equipment, and then why the industrial version is a premium feedstock rather than a problem — including what a washing line does with it and what turns a good wrap stream into a bad one.

Is Plastic Wrap Recyclable
Industrial stretch wrap is recyclable and is recycled routinely at scale. Household cling film generally is not, in the sense that no realistic collection route exists for it. Both are films, but they differ in resin, thickness, cleanliness and the volume in which they arrive, and every one of those differences moves in the same direction.
That asymmetry is worth stating clearly because generic advice hides it. A distribution centre generating half a tonne of pallet wrap a week has a buyer for it. A household generating a handful of grams of cling film a week has nowhere to send it, and the cost of building a route for that material would exceed the value of everything recovered.
Volume is doing most of the work in that comparison. Film is a low-value, high-bulk commodity, so the economics only close when material arrives already concentrated. Two Different Materials Share One Name
Cling film and stretch wrap solve the same problem with opposite chemistry. Cling film clings because of what is added to it. Stretch wrap clings because of how it is applied. That distinction shows up in every downstream decision, from whether an optical sorter will identify it to whether a wash line can clean it.

Resin, gauge, additive package and arrival condition all differ. Only the word is shared.
Kitchen cling film is typically LDPE, or PVC and PVDC in older and food-service grades. It is around ten microns thick, carries tackifiers or plasticisers to make it self-adhering, and it reaches a bin having been wrapped around food. The PVC grades add a second problem: they are chlorinated, so even a small fraction contaminates a polyolefin melt.
Pallet stretch wrap is LLDPE, typically 12 to 30 microns, and it clings through a surface cling additive combined with the elastic tension of being stretched over a load. It is usually unprinted, usually one resin all the way through, and it comes off a pallet clean because it never touched a product. That is a completely different item to buy.
Stretch hood film and shrink wrap sit between the two. They are polyethylene and they are industrial, but stretch hood is often multilayer and pigmented, and shrink wrap has usually been heated, which changes its behaviour in an extruder. Both are workable feedstocks that price below clear stretch wrap.
What Wrap Does to Equipment That Bags Do Not
A carrier bag entering a sorting plant is a nuisance that stops at one machine. A length of stretch film is a different order of problem, because film delivered in a continuous web behaves like rope rather than like sheet, and rope finds every rotating shaft on the way through a plant.
Start with tensile behaviour. A dry carrier bag tears. A stretch film web does not — LLDPE is drawn during application, which orients the polymer chains and makes the film extraordinarily strong along its length. Feed a few metres of that into any machine with a turning shaft and it twists into a cord that will not break, will not cut and keeps winding until something stalls.

Long webs rope around shafts. Thin tacky film blinds apertures. Different mechanisms, same result.
Thin tacky film fails differently. Cling film is too light to be thrown by an air separator and too sticky to fall through a screen, so it lays itself over apertures and closes them. A trommel or a finger screen that has been blinded is still turning, still fed and separating nothing, which is worse than a stalled machine because it goes unnoticed for longer.
Moisture makes both worse. Wet film adheres to steel, to conveyor belts and to itself, so material that would have been shaken loose when dry travels through the plant as a mat. This is why film handling problems always spike after wet weather at sites with any outdoor storage.
None of this is a reason the material cannot be recycled. It is a reason it cannot be recycled in a plant designed for containers, which is a different statement and the one that gets lost in consumer guidance.
Why Warehouse Stretch Film Is a Premium Feedstock
Ask a film recycler what they most want to buy and baled clear stretch wrap comes near the top of the list. Four properties do it: one resin throughout, no printing, low soil load, and a supplier who already baled it because they had no other way to store it.

Single resin matters because it removes the hardest sorting problem in film entirely. No near-infrared stage is needed to separate PP from PE, no float-sink tuning, no compromise grade. Unprinted matters because ink is the one contaminant washing cannot fully defeat, and it is what forces most mixed film output into dark pellet. Clear LLDPE in gives near-natural pellet out, which is the grade that sells back into film production rather than into lumber.
Low soil load changes the line configuration rather than just the yield. Warehouse film has been indoors its whole life. It carries dust, tape, the occasional label and sometimes a staple, but not the soil and grit that agricultural film brings. The processing itself is then straightforward. Bales are opened, film is cut on an anti-tangle crusher to 10–20 mm flake, pre-washed to take off dust, friction-scrubbed to lift tape adhesive, and passed through a float-sink tank where tape backing, staples, grit and any stray PET or PVC fragments sink out while the polyethylene floats. Two-stage mechanical dewatering — centrifugal dryer then screw press — brings moisture under roughly 12 % before hot air drying takes the flake below 5 %.
Bale opening deserves a note of its own. Dense film bales are not something a film crusher can be fed directly, and this is where the roping behaviour described earlier becomes a design constraint rather than a nuisance. A double shaft shredder handles that first pass, using low-speed high-torque shearing between interlocking blades rather than the high-speed cutting that film defeats.
What Changes When the Wrap Is Dirty
Agricultural film, construction sheeting and post-consumer wrap all use the same line and a different recipe. The equipment does not change; the wash intensity, the water treatment load and the achievable output grade all do, and the economics change with them.
Hot washing becomes necessary rather than optional. A tank at 60–80 °C dissolves the oils, grease and organic residue that cold water leaves in place, and detergent dosing rises with it. Both consume the steam and chemical budget that a clean stretch film campaign leaves at zero, which is the single largest operating cost difference between the two feedstocks.

Water treatment load rises faster than contamination does. Soil-heavy film puts fines into the wash water that have to be filtered out for the closed-loop system to keep working, so a line running agricultural film needs its filtration and settling capacity sized for that duty from the start rather than added later.
Output grade drops. Mixed, printed, soil-loaded film yields a dark pellet suited to refuse sacks, damp-proof membrane, pipe and composite lumber. That is a real market with real volume, and it is not the film-grade market. What Actually Kills a Wrap Stream
Most rejected film loads fail for a small number of reasons, and almost all of them are decided before the material reaches a plant. The table below lists what a buyer checks on arrival and what each item does to the process if it gets through.

Most rejected film loads fail on one of these, and every one of them is decided before the bale ships.
UV degradation is the one that surprises people, because the film still looks like film. Sunlight breaks polymer chains, so a bale that sat outdoors for a season produces a pellet with lower molecular weight and a melt flow index that no longer matches what the buyer specified. Storing bales under cover costs almost nothing and protects the grade.
Which Line Handles Wrap Film
Equipment selection for wrap follows the same logic as for any film stream. What matters is the contamination load, whether the buyer wants flake or pellet, and how much residual moisture the downstream stage can tolerate. Resin identity is usually already settled by the time a wrap stream exists.

One planning point sits outside the equipment list entirely. If the wrap stream is generated by your own operation, the highest-return investment is usually a baler at the point where the film comes off the pallet, not anything in the recycling line. Baled film is worth money and loose film is worth freight, and that gap is decided in the warehouse.

Can you put plastic wrap in recycling?
Not in a kerbside bin. Film wraps around sorting equipment and blinds screen apertures, so mixed-recycling programmes exclude it. Clean, dry polyethylene wrap is accepted at many store drop-off points that collect bags and film together. Cling film used on food is generally excluded even there.
Is cling film recyclable?
In practice no.
